Match report:
Leinster Junior Championship 2011 - St Sylvesters (Dublin) v St Annes (Wexford)
St Sylvesters Ladies started their Leinster campaign with a hard fought victory against a strong St Annes team on Thursday night last under the lights in Fingallians GAA Club in Swords.
The game was played at a high tempo from the start with both sides pushing hard for early scores. Mel Flanagan opened the scoring with a fine point for the Malahide club but this was followed by two super points from St Annes Wexford county star Fiona Rochford. Both sides notched up another point each before the game opened up. Sinead Aherne scored a fine goal to put the Syls girls 2 points clear but the Wexford girls hit back with a well worked goal from county minor and soccer international Fiona Barrett. Both sides missed some clear chances before Aherne knocked in another goal followed by a cool finish to the net by Dublin minor Nicole Owens, to put her team ahead by four points at the break.
From the re-start the Syls girls started to get a tighter grip on possession with Sinead Tracey, Niamh McEvoy and Louise Ryan winning the bulk of possession in midfield. Diane McIlhagga kicked an early point but they failed to take advantage of this period of dominance. The St Annes girls started to dominate possession and kicked 3 points without replay to bring it to a 2 point game as the game entered the final 10 minutes. Lisa McIntyre pulled off some super saves in the Syls goal to deny both Rochford and Barrett. Aimee Hazely and Michele Walls were rocks in defence for the Dubliners before super sub Emer Treacy with 2 goals and Owens with another, killed off the St Annes challenge to the disappointment of the large travelling Wexford crowd.
A cracking game with both sides giving it their all. But as the saying goes, goals win games and the Syls girls made sure of that. They now advance to the Leinster Junior Championship Quarter Final where they will take on Kilkenny champions, Mullinavat on the 2nd October at their home ground in Broomfield @ 2pm.
Final Score: St Sylvesters (Dublin) 6-6, St Annes (Wexford) 1-13
