Dubs to face Galway in All Ireland SF

  • Aug 11,2011

Dublin will take on Connacht champions Galway this Sunday in the All-Ireland U16 semi-final in Ballymahon at 3pm. Dublin are the reigning U16 All Ireland champions having won the title last year following an epic match over the girls from the kingdom. In total Dublin have been U16 champs on three occasions winning the first title back in 1989 with the second title won in 2006 this victory was significant as it bridged a 17 year gap.

This current crop of Dublin players and their management team would dearly love to win back to back All Ireland championships a feat which has never been achieved by the metropolitans at this particular grade.

Dublin’s 2011 campaign started back on the 12th of March with a 2-12 to 2-05 win over Meath in the first round of the Leinster championship, this was followed up by round robin wins over Wexford and Laois. Dublin would meet Wexford again but this time in the Leinster semi-final with the Dubs coming away 6-11 to 4-04 winners over the model County.

Dublin once again would face Meath this time to decide who would be crowned Leinster champions.

The Leinster final was played on the 18th of June the game was a close exciting affair with the Dubs eventually edging out their Leinster neighbours by seven points, final score line Dublin 4-09 Meath 3-05.

So eight weeks later and the Dubs are back in action this coming Sunday, endeavouring to keep players prepared during this long period of time has been a difficult task for the Dubs management team as Galway come in to Sunday’s semi-final having played the Connacht final versus Mayo only two weeks ago.

A number of the current panel featured in last years All Ireland success over Kerry and this experience should be of assistance to the team come Sunday.

Mags Doherty of Wexford is the official in charge of the game with the winners facing either Kerry or Monaghan in the final on the 28th of August next.

Dublin’s Path to the semi-final:
12th March 2011: Meath 2-05 Dublin 2-12
22nd April 2011: Dublin 4-13 Wexford 2-04
