Gaelic 4 Mothers .... Mums can play ball too!

  • Apr 01,2011

Gaelic4Mothers is a national initiative started by the Ladies Gaelic Football Association in 2008. It is aimed at women who have not played Gaelic football in a long time or may never have played before. (Participants do not have to be actual mothers to be eligible but they do have to be over 18).

The central aim of the program is to provide women with the opportunity to be physically active within a non-competitive environment in the Ladies Gaelic Football Association. Gaelic4Mothers also provides women with the chance to interact with and get to know other women from the locality. The program also serves to create a fun and social dimension to any existing Ladies Football section in a club.

The program was initially designed to last 6 weeks but has now developed into a more established and regular section in participating clubs. While there are no Gaelic4Mothers competitions the Ladies Gaelic Football Association do run non-competitive regional and national blitz days throughout the year.

There are many benefits to establishing a Gaelic4Mothers section within a club. Not only does it benefit the general health of the participants but it also encourages women to become more involved in the existing club structure.

The speed at which Gaelic4Mothers has grown throughout the country serves only to reinforce the fact that once a club starts it they never look back!

The following clubs are presently running the Gaelic4Mothers programme in Dublin:

Ballinteer St Johns, Castleknock, Clan Na Gael Fontenoy, Clontarf, Cuala, Kilmacud Crokes, Lucan Sarsfields, Naomh Barrog, Round Towers, St Finians Swords, St Peregrines, Trinity Gaels, Thomas Davis and Whitehall Colmcille.

Naomh Olaf is the newest recruit to the programme and has had a fantastic response from the Women of Sandyford with huge numbers turning up and playing ball!
