Aisling McGing 2011 Update..

Aisling McGing Memorial Championship 2011:

Having suffered three consecutive heart breaking final defeats in this competition at the hands of Cork Dublin eventually got the “red monkey” off their back last year when they secured the Aisling McGing crown in impressive style.

The rebel County had no response to the Dub’s dominance in the 2010 final indeed Dublin kept Cork scoreless for the entire second half, which in itself is no mean feat.

The 2011 campaign will see a number of changes firstly Dublin have a new management team,  Pat Stritch of St Margaret’s takes over from Angie McNally who has moved up the managerial ladder to be a selector with the Senior team.  Secondly the competition itself has had something of a revamp with the introduction of a shield for those who don’t make the semi-finals proper.

Mayo are once again fielding a team which is fitting as the competition is named after a Mayo player Aisling McGing who died tragically in a car accident some years ago en route to a Connacht final.

While Munster duo of Kerry and Tipperary bring the total number of Counties competing to seven which is enlightening to the Dublin and Corks of this world who value the importance of this competition and have entered a team every year since its inception back in 2007.

The full complement of participating Counties is Cork, Dublin, Kerry, Galway, Mayo, Meath and Tipperary.

Dublin begins the defence of their title with a home tie versus Mayo on the 24th of July followed by an away fixture versus Kerry on the 7th of August. Semi-finals are pencilled in for the 20th/21st of August with both the final and shield final taking place on the 3rd of September.
