Annual Convention 2010

  • Nov 19,2010

With most of the football end of matters now complete the business end of the Association moves to centre stage as the Dublin Ladies Annual Convention takes place on Saturday @ 12:00 noon in Parnell Park.

Fifty eight clubs are now affiliated to the Association with the County now providing football for nearly 7000 players and organising competitions from U9 up to and including adult. The club scene in Dublin continues to prosper and grow with that comes a huge administration challenge for all those responsible for the task.

Over 1900 domestic games were organised by the County this year. In addition 58 new referees were trained up bringing the total number of referees officiating in Dublin to over 120. This growth was showcased on the last weekend in October when over 42 juvenile championship and shield finals took place ensuring that over 1680 girls played Ladies Gaelic Football in one weekend!

2010 without question has been the association’s most successful season since its foundation back in 1985. The Dubs featured in four All Ireland finals in 2010, winning three!  plus three provincial crowns were also added to the Counties honours list. Last weekend Dublin picked up six All Star awards while Sarah McCaffrey was named as Leinster Young Player of the Year, an impeccable end to a marvellous year!

The capturing of the Brendan Martin cup back in September has transported Ladies Gaelic Football in Dublin firmly into the sporting spotlight giving the game a huge boost with the potential to further increase the playing numbers amongst the capitals clubs and also to give the sport a higher profile in Dublin primary and post primary schools.

The Association in Dublin under the chairmanship of Camillus Kilpatrick acknowledged the growing demands on its County administration structure. Dublin became the first Ladies County Board in the Country to take on a full time employee and opened an office back in September to provide administration support, advice and assistance to the clubs of the County.

Camillus steps down from his post on Saturday after three years at the helm. In that time period Camillus has been responsible for the Counties transition from a County Board that was floundering into a County that has become the trendsetter for all others to emulate.

His drive, ambition and vision to make Dublin the best both on and off the field of play will provide his successor with a very hard act to follow!
