Dublin hit six..
- Nov 15,2010
2010 has been a momentous year for Dublin and the success keeps coming as further history was made last Saturday night when Dublin bagged six All Star Awards. This was the highest number of awards won by the County at one event and it topped the four won back in 2004. Rachel Ruddy, Denise Masterson and Amy McGuinness were first time winners while Siobhan McGrath, Sinead Aherne and Gemma Fay now have two bronze statuettes and now join Kathleen Kennedy (1982/83) and Cliodhna O’Connor (2004,’09) as double All-star winners.
As is the case in all award announcements there where a few surprises, Bord Gáis Energy NFL winners Cork only bagged one award with Bríd Stack named at centre back while Kerry must feel hard done by that no outfield player secured an award despite excellent performances all season in the green and gold from Aisling Leonard and Bernie Breen. Dublin goalkeeper and two time All Star winner Cliodhna O’Connor was also a surprise omission.
The Young Players of the Year Awards went to Sarah Rowe (Kilmoremoy, Ballina, Mayo – CONNACHT), Sarah Caffrey (Clontarf, Dublin – LEINSTER), Nicole O’Connor (Ballyduff/Abbeydorney, Kerry – MUNSTER) and Kirsty McGuinness (St. Pauls, Antrim – ULSTER).
The induction of Johnny Hayes into the Ladies Football Hall of Fame also took place on the night. Hayes created the Ballyhea Ladies club in 1983 and then played an instrumental role in the club’s amalgamation with Lissycasey in 1986 to form the Fergus Rovers club.Hayes has been involved in coaching county teams from underage to senior level and has fulfilled a number of roles on the county board including Treasurer and Chairperson. He has served as Munster’s delegate to Central Council and acted as Munster President in 1992/93.
