Heavy showers were forecast and the weatherman was right. About two hours before Tony Lennon was due to start the 2010 Dublin Ladies Intermediate Championship, the rain began. It stopped just after the throw-in though and the air was still and intense. So was the game that had just started in Parnell Park. The two sides competing for the honours this year were Clanna Gael Fontenoy and Parnells. Parnells were out of the traps first and put up a barrage on the Ringsend side’s defence. Lyndsey Peat got the first point in the first minute but the Clanna Gael girls closed down the Parnell forwards and two more attempts went sailing wide. Clanna Gael got one of their own in the 4thminute but from then on the Coolock side dominated the half, throwing everything at the Ringsend girls. To add to their woes, Kate McKenna in the No.8 Clanna Gael jersey was sin binned half way through, but the 14 remaining players kept their nerve and Parnells managed only one point in the 10 minute hiatus. This came about when Serena Hannon pulled off a magnificent save from the boot of Lyndsey Peat and it ricocheted over the bar. Parnells had 5 points on the board by this time to Clanna Gael’s 1 and they increased it to 3 in the dying minutes of the half.

The second half opened with a 45 being awarded in the 1st minute to Parnells which in turn created a free. This was taken by Laura Flannery and the tally moved up to 6. The game was more open than the first half and soon the Ringsend side were on the attack. A free was awarded to them which went wide. The ball wasn’t long back in play when Lauren Rimmer found the back of the Parnells net and the sides were level. Another Clanna Gael point put them 1 ahead and it was matched at the far end of the park with a free awarded to Emma Kelly. Parnells inched slowly ahead again with two more but the gap was narrowed to a single point with just two minutes left on the clock. There was a tussle around the Parnells large rectangle and Emma Merrigan matched Hannon’s first half save.  It looked all over for the Ringsend side as the game went into stoppage time. But never to be beaten, the Clanna Gael girls put in a supreme effort which saw Niamh Foley clinch the winning goal on the 31st minute.

It was soon over after that. The Intermediate Cup has a new name on it and Clanna Gael Fontenoy will represent Dublin in the Leinster Intermediate Club Championship.
