Leinster Under 14 Final
Dublin 6-11 v Kildare 2-4.
A Travel Blog says that predicting the weather in Ireland can be tricky as there are days when you can experience all four season’s in one! The advice is to always expect rain! (make sure you take an umbrella), and if you are travelling early summer the sun may just be shining. Well it was shining today – and then some. In sweltering conditions more Costa Del Sol than Clane in Kildare the Dublin Under 14s took on their Kildare counterparts in the 2010 Leinster Final.
From the off, the Jackies were up for it putting the ball slightly wide in the opening stages. Then they forced the Lily Whites to concede two 45s all within the opening 3 minutes. The next shot was saved by the Kildare ‘keeper McGuinness but she needed some attention after it. Leah Mullins eventually found her mark with an impressive goal on the 8thminute. Niamh Ryan pointed a free shortly after and then Miceala McKenna scored a lovely goal for the home side which bounced and hopped over the Danielle Aylmer’s head in the Dublin sticks. Another Kildare point put the scoreboard level half way through the first period. Although the Jackies had about 70% of the possession in the first half they weren’t able to convert and it is a testament to the Kildare defence that the score board didn’t reflect this. Meanwhile, the Kildare forwards were useful in finding the chinks in the Dublin armour and put 2-2 on the board to Dublin’s 3-5 at the half time whistle.
During the Team Talk in the break, the girls knew that they could do much better and assurances were given that the second period would improve.
Which is exactly what happened. The Jackies piled on the pressure and put another 2-3 between the sides without reply in the opening 10 minutes. That resolute Kildare defence kicked in again and a full 16 minutes of play took place before Simone Reilly put a lovely point over the bar. Much of the play at this time was down at the Dublin defence, but the lessons of the first half were well learned and try as they might, Kildare couldn’t find an opening. It wasn’t until 27 minute in that Kildare got through with a point. They kept playing though and put the last one over on the three pips.
Outstanding performances were put in by all the team, but the Leinster Council officials selected Leah Mullins as Player of the Match.
