U16 Report - Dublin Dominate Laois

U16 ‘A’ Leinster Championship; Laois vs Dublin; Sat 8th May 2010

 

Dublin produced an excellent display to overcome aspirited Laois side in the final round robin game of the U16 Leinster Championship in Timahoe, County Laois, on Saturday 8thMay. Played in sunny but windy conditions both teams displayed some super football but it was the away team that prevailed on a score line of 5-15 to 4-5.

 

Laois started with the aid of the strong breeze and knocked over an early point before Dublin settled with apoint from Oonagh Whyte. A Laois goal extended their lead and they had the Dublin defence under pressure early on. Superb blocking and fielding from Deirdre Murphy at full back assisted by corner backs, Claire King and Leah Caffrey, kept Laois at bay. Dublin hit back midway through the first half with a goal from Lauren Ebbs. At this stage Dublin were playing some great team football into the wind. Ciara Trant, Emma McDonagh and Aoife Nolan were providing quality possession in midfield and further scores from Lauren Ebbs and Maria Kenny extended the Dublin lead.

 

The Dublin backs hussled and harried for every ball and worked tirelessly into the elements. Half backs Sarah McCaffrey, Sarah Hawkshaw and Grainne Barrett broke forward whenever possible to assist the midfielders and a further goal from Oonagh Whyte left the score 3-3 to 2-2 at half time.

 

Laois started the second half well with two points to reduce the deficit. However the Dublin midfielders and forwards settled down and successive points from Ciara Trant, Lauren Ebbs and Maria Kenny settled any nerves. Long kick outs by Dublin keeper Therese O’Connor assisted the Dublin effort with the wind. Half forwards Molly Lamb and Siobhan Woods were linking well with the midfielders and half backs and provided a constant supply of ball to the full forward line who scored some fine points in the second period. Laois hit back with a well struck penalty and another goal to reduce the deficit however further goals from Lauren Ebbs and Oonagh Whtye and points from Siobhan Woods sealed the Dublin victory on a score line of 5-15 to 4-5.

 

Dublin produced a magnificent display in the first half playing into a strong breeze and containing a strong Laois half forward line. In the second half Dublin played with composure to use the elements and take some fine long range points. Laois produced a spirited comeback for a period in the second half that will stand them in good stead for future games.
