2009 Kick Fada

The sun was shining in Bray Emmets this lunchtime when a record 15 Ladies tried their skills at the 10th MBNA Kick Fada. Several Counties were represented today among the 15 players and these included some past winners of this contest. The competition was going to be strong and all but 2 made it through to the 40m line. 4 players were left in contention after the 45m line was crossed. 45m is beyond last years winning mark at the 43m spot! After the elimination of 2 more at the 47m just local Bray girl Aisling OhAnnaidh and Ballyboden St Enda’s Suzanne Hughes were set up for a Wicklow v Dublin shoot out. Aisling preferred to take her kick out of the hand from off on the right wing while Suzanne was most comfortable shooting straight from the ground. Each had three attempts and when the kicks were taken it was the ‘Boden keeper who collected the award. Well done Suzanne!

In the tradition of Kick Fada, the winner is entitled to have a shot at breaking the record. The record in the Ladies competition had been set back in 2001 by none other that Suzanne herself and it stands at a 52m. That’s 170 feet 8 inches. Suzanne opted to try to break the record and easily put a practice shot over from the 50m line. But the magic 53m proved elusive. The range was right, the height was right but the ball clipped the upright and went out for a wide. It can be done Suzanne, and we will see you back in Bray next year.
