U16 ‘A’ Leinster Championship; Kildare vs Dublin; Mon 13th April 2009

Dublin continued their recent form with a hard fought win over Kildare in Carbury. Played in wet and windy conditions both teams battled extremely hard but it was the visitors that prevailed on a score line of 2-13 to 3-4.

Dublin started against the wind and responded well against early Kildare pressure. Scores from Megan Carney, Emma McDonagh and Aisling King settled Dublin but Kildare rallied back with fine scores of their own. Kildare produced some excellent running football and the Dublin backs, led by Aoife Caffrey and including Claire King, Leah Caffrey, Claire Young, Jenny Ward and Sarah McCaffrey worked very hard to minimise Kildare’s chances. Goalkeeper Emer Cassidy was also very busy and made some fine saves to thwart the Kildare attack.

Midfielders Olivia Smart and Jessica Wall, assisted throughout by Elaine McGrath, worked tirelessly and delivered quality possession to the Dublin corner forwards, Megan Carney and Sinead Farrelly. At half time the game was finely balanced with Dublin leading by 0-6 to 1-2.

Dublin started the second half well with scores from Nicole Owens, Emma McDonagh, Megan Carney and Olivia Smartt. Kildare rallied and stormed into a four-point lead with fifteen minutes remaining. However Dublin battled back and a well-taken goal by Maria Kenny settled Dublin nerves. Further scores from Siobhan Woods and Olivia Smartt ensured that Dublin won out on a score line of 2-13 to 3-4.

Dublin and Kildare were well matched throughout this encounter and it was only in the last ten minutes that the game was won by Dublin. Both teams showed great determination and commitment and played some quality football in poor weather conditions.

Dublin will play Wicklow in Round 5 on April 18th.

PS- Thanks to Carbury GAA who put on a wonderful spread of food after the game for both teams
