U16 ‘A’ Leinster Championship; Laois vs Dublin; Sat 28th March 2009

Dublin kick started their 2009 U16 campaign with a fine win over Laois in Park Rathineska. Played in dry but very windy weather conditions the visitors prevailed on a score line of 9-11 to 3-5.

Dublin started against the wind and battled well against early Laois pressure. Scores from Siobhan Killeen and Megan Carney settled any nerves and Dublin produced some excellent possession football carrying the ball continuously into the stiff wind. The six backs, led by Ellen Keatley and Aoife Caffrey and including Claire King, Lucy Collins, Claire Young, Jenny Ward were extremely effective and minimised Laois scoring opportunities. Goalkeeper Emer Cassidy was very solid under the numerous high balls being launched in by the Laois forwards.

Midfielders Olivia Smart and Jessica Wall, assisted by Aisling King and Nicole Owens, worked tirelessly and delivered quality possession to the Dublin forwards. Further scores from Elaine McGrath and Emma McDonagh ensured that Dublin finished the first half leading by 3-4 to 2-4.

With the aid of a strong wind in the second half Dublin racked up a further 6-7 with scores from Maria Kenny, Nicole Owens, Siobhan Woods, Jenny Ward and others. Laois battled well against the elements but is was Dublin who prevailed in the end.  Dublin played some excellent football throughout and their performance was a huge improvement on the first round of the championship.

Dublin will play Wexford in Round 3 on April 4th.
