Preview of Dublin V Kildare

Bord Gais Energy National League,Division 1B.

Dublin v Kildare, 2pm, Naomh Mearnóg (Portmarnock) Sunday 15th February 2009.

Dublin and Kildare meet next Sunday in round 2 in Naomh Mearnóg at 2pm. Dublin come into this game brimming with confidence on the back of a comprehensive win over Monaghan in round 1. The Jackies won by 4-7 to 1-7. Kildare on the other hand suffered a heavy defeat in Cork losing by 2-12 to 0-4. Kildare manager, Paul Kelly, will be looking for a much improved performance from his side as this is a must win game. A second defeat would leave them staring at relegation. Clares unexpected victory over Galway last week makes Division 1B highly competitive and means that teams are under pressure not to drop points. Kildares priority must be to remain in Division 1 of the league. Dublin manager, Gerry McGill, will have targeted a place in the knock-out stages. When the two sides met last year the game ended in a draw, twelve points apiece. Kildares forwards will have their work cut out to break down the Dublin defence. Last week that defence was rock solid against last years beaten All -Ireland finalists, Monaghan. There were outstanding displays from Sorcha Furlong, Maria Kavanagh, Siobhan McGrath and Noelle Comyn in defence. Denise Masterson lorded it at midfield while up front Sinead Ahearne and Niamh Hurley accounted for 3-5 of Dublins total. In fact five of Dublins forwards scored on the day. Colleen Barrett also had an excellent game.

Kildare will once again depend on the Leahy sisters, Brianne and Kate to drive them forward and keep a good supply of ball going into the forward line. Brianne who is studying in Aberdeen will travel home for all of the league fixtures. She has two All Stars to her credit for fine displays in 2001 and 2007. Kate missed the game against Cork with an infection. Clodagh Fanagan, Aishling Holton, Aisling Jennings, Maria Moolick, Tracey Noone, Aisling Lambe and Elaine Dillon from the Junior All-Ireland winning team of 2004 all return to the panel again this year. Tracey returns after a two-year break. All of their experience will be needed if they hope to contain the Jackies. Aishling Savage played at fullback against Cork. Aishling was co-captain of The Underdogs along with Dublins Orla Brennan from St. Brigids. She also returns after a two-year break. Former Thomas Davis player, Paul Kelly, manages the team. He managed Eadestown to an All-Ireland Junior club title in 2006 defeating Emyvale of Monaghan in the process.

Forecast : - Dublin to win.

Dublins blend of youth and experience plus a very useful subs bench will be too strong for Kildare
