Dublin Second best in Aishling Mc Ging Final

  • Jan 01,1970

There were lots of Gaelic supporters in Toomevarra today, Kerry supporters! Lines of them were travelling through on their way to the capital for tomorrows Big Final. Green and Gold everywhere and added to by banners wishing the Toomevarra U14 Hurlers the best in their bid for the County Championship!

There was a Big Final in Toomevarra today too and a few souls ventured out from the Capital to cheer on the Girls in Blue for their second final against Cork in the Aisling McGing Cup. There were folks from Fingallians and Round Towers Clondalkin. Clannagael Fontenoy were there too fresh from winning the cup in their outing to Canada!

Mel Kenny of Mayo started the game promptly at 3 oclock and from the off it was going to be a tough game. We had to wait 10 minutes until Áine Sheehan from Cork opened the account with a point. Sarah Denvir replied 3 minutes later and so it went on, point for point for most of the first half. Dublin hit a good patch going ahead at the end with 3 points on the 29th, 30th and 32nd minute leaving the score 0 - 7 for the Dubs against the Rebelettes 0-4 at the whistle.

The Girls in Blue started the second half with a point on the 3 minute in. Cork replied with 2  in the next 4 minutes. Then there were 2 on the 11th and 13th minute. Then it went pear shaped. That Áine Sheehan is "very handy with her feet" as we say in Dublin. But when Cork added Anne ODonovan [No.23] to the field - a supersub - it was 20 minutes before the Dubs got near the Cork sticks again and that was a free converted by capt Teresa Molohan. All the while that duo were notching up the points. Hannah Tyrell pulled off some great saves but the inevitable goal came on the 28th minute and the writing was on the wall. When the final whistle came Cork had 1 - 13 on the board and Dublin 0-11.

Player of the match............ Áine Sheehan of course. Well done there. It was deserved.

Uachtaráin CPG na mBan, Gerlindine Giles said the the Dubs had improved greatly since last years outing. Well done there too.

Theresa and Jimmy McGing were on hand to present the Trophy, so that was a nice touch. The sun was shining and that too took the edge off it. No more to say but back into the tide of Green and Gold outside the gate. If the Kerry Lads had only known, they could have been to two All Irelands this weekend!
