St Marks march on in Leinster Championship

  • Sep 14,2008

It was one of those "summer" days in McGee Park this afternoon. St Helens bus from Longford had arrived in good time and both the visitors and St Marks were out in the rain warming up to ensure a timely throw-in.

Well the game started on time and it wasnt long before St Helens put a point on the score board. If you dont know McGee Park, its on a bit of a hill and the home side were playing up the gradient in the first half. Indeed the Tallaght girls defense was under pressure from the off. But the ball broke loose and the home side collected a goal about 10 minutes in. Marks were able to keep the possession for the most part from then on and the first half finished 3-5 to 0-5 for the home side.

After the break the weather had taken its toll at the top of the pitch and underfoot conditions had become decidedly slippy. St Helens were determined to even the score. But whether it was the studs in their boots or the skill of the home defenders play in this area often became a mudbath. Two penalties were awarded and neither converted. We had a long wait for St Helens to open the score but all the while the ball was being passed down the line to the Black and Yellows forward line. And they were taking their points. It was late on when the visitiors found their target and in the dying moments they made a goal.

St Marks 4-12 v St Helens Longford 1-6

St Marks go on to the Leinster quarter final v the Kildare Junior Champions in about 3 weeks. Good Luck girls!
