MBNA Kick Fada 2009

  • Sep 10,2009

It must be Autumn once again as its Kick Fada time in Bray.

The Ladies Competition starts at 12.30 [be there for 12 noon] and Dublin would like to take the trophy back from Meath.

So, all you Ladies with a good kick, come on out to Bray on Saturday and try your skills in this unique competition.

Rules of the Competition

The competition will be known as the MBNA Kick Fada competition.

The competition is open to all current GAA members over the age of 18.

The object of the competition is to find the longest yet most accurate, kicker of a standard GAA football.

The winner of the competition will be the contestant with the longest successful kick.

A successful kick is deemed to be one where the ball crosses over the bar and between the uprights prior to touching the ground.

The ball used will be a standard Size 5 (Ladies will use a Size 4).

Each kick will be taken from a pre-determined marked distance from the target.

The kick may be taken either from the hand or from the ground.

The taking of a kick by each remaining contestant at a specific distance will be called a round.

There will be a maximum of 3 rounds per distance.

Once a contestant has achieved a successful kick they will be deemed to have qualified for the next distance and will not be required to take a further kick at the current distance.

Each contestant will take a kick in turn until all remaining members of the group have completed an attempt at the current distance.

After a maximum of 3 rounds at a particular distance the distance will be increased by a pre-determined number of metres and a new round will begin for all successful kickers.

If a contestant fails to make any successful kick at a particular distance they will not go forward to the next round.

In the event of no contestant achieving a successful kick in a round there will be a sudden-death playoff of all contestants who qualified for that round.

The winner of the competition will have the choice of continuing, within the rules, to establish the longest successful kick and attempt to set a new record.

MBNA Kick Fada at Bray Emmets - Sat 13th September 2008

It nearly didnt happen this year, but a late call went out and players from across the country assembled in Bray for the 9th Kick Fada competition this afternoon.

The rules are simple, there are lines on the pitch every 5m starting at the 30m. The goal is double width and each player takes 3 shots over the bar. Players who put one over stay in to the next round - 5m further out, and so on.

It was to be a nail biting finish as both Cliodhna OConnor [Dublin] and Mary Sheridan [Meath] went through after the 40m. The Umpire decided to increase to 42m and both girls came through. Another meter was added and again both put the ball over the black spot. When the range was set at 45m though, neither player could find the target and it was sudden death then back at the 40. Disaster struck the Dubs girl at the 42 which although had the height and distance sailed slightly to the left of the upright heading in the direction of Wicklow! It was not to be and Meath took the honours today.

Clionadh and fellow Mearnógian teammate Emma Dunne took home the Silver and Bronze. Well done Cliodhna, Emma and the Dublin girls who turned out to make this years event a record attendance in the Ladies competition. Well be back!

Dublin Ladies interests were represented in the Mens competition too when Gerry McGill stepped up to the mark. But there was a tricky breeze blowing as Mícheal OMuircheartaigh kept pointing out. It was one of those gusts which had already caught Cliodhna that put Gerry out of the competition on the 55m line. Dublin collected the Bronze in the Mens competition with a fine performance by Kilmacuds Mark Vaughan.

"The Ladies Kick Fada event was won by Meath forward Mary Sheridan. A sister of Meath senior footballer Joe Sheridan, she registered a winning kick of 43 metres.

The Seneschalstown native was just ahead of Naomh Mearnog duo Cliodhna OConnor and Emma Dunne, who secured second and third spot respectively"
