AISLING McGING CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND ONE

DUBLIN Senior B 2-6    CORK 1-10

A superb second half comeback by the Dubs jus wasn’t enough to topple reigning Champions Cork in a cracking match played in the majestic surroundings of Nemo Rangers in Cork last Sunday.
Conditions were ideal for football except for a very strong wind which favoured the Jackie’s in the first half. Cork were the first to settle and opened up a two point advantage quickly wit some slick forward play before a Teresa Mollohan Point was followed up by one from  Sarah Gulifoyle to level the game. Cork again responded with another brace before a superb Elena Griffin point was followed by the equaliser by Natasha Barnwall. But Cork responded and laid siege to the Dublin Goal but the dubs defended bravely inspired by Full back Aine Deasy and helped by some wonderful goalkeeping by Lynn Dowling. Cork struck the final point of the first half and the tams went in with the rebelettes 0-5 to 0-4 ahead at half time.

With a strong wind and a one point lead at their disposal it was expected that Cork would run out easy winners but the Dubs responded immediately with the Equalising Point from Sarah Denvir who was a threat all day. Cork than began to play like champions and struck two points without reply before a 45 which the Dublin defence failed to deal with nestled in the corner of the net to increase Corks Lead to 5 points. Faced with a 5 point defecate and a strong wind this was a true test of the Dubs character and they responded magnificently lead from Corner back by the brilliant Karen Hudson the Jackie’s suddenly began to play like their lives depended on it and when the impressive Sarah Guilfoyle kick her second point Cork rallied again with further scores. The introduction of two subs Nicola Daly And Sarah Stritch paid immediate dividend as their pace began to trouble the Cork defence which resulted in a great move finished by the net by the elusive Sarah Denvir to Narrow the gap to just to just 3 points. Cork again responded up field with a great point to set up an anxious few minutes for all. The Dublin girls refused to give in and another great move ended with Sarah Stritch being fouled and a penalty awarded to Dublin. Up stepped Centre back Sorcha Furlong on her inter county debut and she slipped the ball under the Cork keeper to narrow the gap to just one point deep into injury time. Dublin searched for the equaliser but the referee blew shortly after and Cork held out for a one point win.
This was a tremendous game of football played throughout in a very sporting manner a credit to both counties and their management teams. Both teams will hope to build on this performance and it’s Meath up next for the Dubs. This game will be played in St Margaret’s Gaa Club on Wednesday 2nd July at 8pm.Please Come out and support the girls
