"BaRuGa - Girls Play Ball"
- May 22,2008
Ladies Gaelic Football, Leinster Women’s Rugby and Basketball Ireland launched the first ever Basketball, Ladies Gaelic and Rugby Summer camp for teenage girls on Tuesday 20th May in the National Basketball Arena, Tymon Park Tallaght.
More Details…..
The multi sports fun camp was launched under the name ‘BaRuGa - Girls play Ball’ and will take place over one week from June 9th – June 13th inclusive. The Associations are very excited about this project and feel it will be an excellent opportunity for local girls in the community to become involved in sports.
The project is a multi sport summer camp for girls (12-18yrs). This target group is the most at risk with regards to their fall off in sports participation and with the rise in teenage obesity this is an excellent way to change their attitude towards sport and exercise. The camp will service Dublin 24 and the nearing areas.
The camp will be held in the National Basketball Arena and the adjacent rugby/ GAA pitches. The camp will be run over the course of a week and will include Rugby, Basketball and Gaelic Football for girls. The girls will learn the basics of all three sports and the hope is that they will continue playing one or all in the future. There will be links to the local rugby, Gaelic and basketball teams to ensure that there is a follow on for the participants. Being involved in sport develops confidence and leadership skills within this target group. It is hoped that these girls will become role models within their community.
There will be a nominal charge (€10) for the camp to ensure that all applicants take part. They will all receive healthy lunches every day, a free T-shirt provided by Fe-line Sport and they will also receive a goody bag at the end of the week.
The organisers of this event are namely Cathy Quinn – Basketball Ireland Development Officer, Lyn Savage - Ladies Gaelic Football Development Officer and Caitríona Bergin - Women’s Rugby Development Officer.
There are only winners when it comes to this summer camp.
