Match Report - Dublin U14 V Kildare&
- Apr 20,2008
Dublin secured back-to-back home wins with a fine win over Kildare in Round 4 of the Ladies U14 ‘A’ Leinster Championship on Saturday 19th April in Westmanstown. Played in dry but windy weather conditions the winners prevailed on a score line of 2-9 to 0-5.
Dublin started well with a well-taken point from Maria Kenny. A long-range goal from Grainne Barrett after ten minutes stretched the lead to four points as Dublin settled and produced some excellent football in the first 20 minutes of the match. Midfielders Stephanie Adams and Emma McDonagh as well as half forward Maeve Scully provided a regular supply of ball into the inside forwards where Maria Kenny, Shauna Garvin and Emma Lennon combined well to cause Kildare difficulties.
Further points from Deirdre Murphy, Siobhan Woods, Shauna Garvin and a goal from Emma Lennon stretched Dublin’s lead to 2-5 to 0-2 at half time. Injuries to Stephanie Adams and Shauna Garvin resulted in changes to the Dublin team but Dublin rallied and kept the Kildare chances to a minimum.
Kildare launched a series of attacks in the second half but the Dublin defence, who were outstanding throughout, kept them at bay. Full back, Ciara Trant, dominated from the edge of the square and Aoife Nolan and Leah Caffrey also thwarted the efforts of the Kildare attackers on a regular basis. For the third match in a row the full back line allowed the opposition very few goal chances which provided a great platform for Dublin’s success.
Claire King, Dublin’s captain, led by example from centre half back and combined continuously with Grainne Barrett to cut out the Kildare supply of ball to their inside forwards.
Further points from Dublin’s Lauren Ebbs and two frees from Siobhan Woods secured Dublin’s third win in succession. Both teams can be proud of their performances given the difficult windy conditions, which made passing and catching extremely difficult throughout.
Dublin have now secured a semi-final berth however their opponents will not be known until after Round 5 of the Championship.
