U14 ‘A’ Leinster Championship; Dublin vs Wexford; Sat 5th April 2008

Dublin produced an excellent performance in Round 3 of the Ladies U14 ‘A’ Leinster Championship on Saturday 5th April winning out on a score line of 6-14 to 2-2.

Played in dry but windy conditions in Westmanstown Dublin played with the assistance of a strong breeze in the first half. A goal in the first minute by Dublin corner forward, Maria Kenny, settled any nerves and Dublin proceeded to make good use of the prevailing conditions.

Midfielders Stephanie Adams and Emma McDonagh dominated proceedings in the middle of the park where they provided a constant supply of good possession for the forwards. In addition Dublin half back Deirdre Murphy provided constant support to the half forwards combining well with Siobhan Woods on the right wing.

Points from Siobhan Woods, Maria Kenny, Emma McDonagh, Stephanie Adams and Emma Lennon kept the scoreboard ticking over with goals from Maeve Scully, Emma McDonagh and another from Maria Kenny extending Dublin’s lead to 4-7 to 1-0 at half time.

Wexford came back with good spirit at the start of the second half as they made use of the strong breeze. The Wexford midfielders and centre half back launched various attacks and they were rewarded with another goal and a point.

However the Dublin defence were extremely resolute and conceded very few scores to the Wexford attack despite the strong breeze. Corner backs Leah Caffrey and Grainne Barrett provided a secure platform for Dublin to build on and the defence worked tirelessly against the strong breeze.

Dublin forwards Maria Kenny, Siobhan Woods and Maeve Scully added further scores to extend Dublin’s lead. Wexford launched further attacks on the Dublin goal but two fine saves from goalkeeper, Norah Harney, kept Wexford at bay.

Right half forward, Siobhan Woods, produced an excellent display of attacking football throughout and was a constant threat to the Wexford defence amassing 1-8 on the day, 1-6 of which was from open play.

Dublin will play Kildare in Round 4 on April 19th as they continue their quest for a Leinster Semi-Final berth.
