Leinster Minor Championship

Dublin 1-13 Wexford 1-04

Dublin registered their second win of the minor championship with a 9 point victory over Wexford.

The score line is not a true reflection of the contest as the girls from the sunny south east made the Dubs work extremely hard for their victory.

The weather conditions were exceptionally unpleasant for both teams with players having to contend with driving winds and rain throughout the entire match.

Wexford playing with the aid of the strong wind in the first half opened the scoring with late replacement Emily Coakley and centre forward Sinead Ryan on target for the visitors.

Ciara McDunphy and Tara Fitzgibbon got the home side on the score board to bring the game level with 17 minutes gone on the clock. McDunphy pulled Dublin ahead in the 22nd minute with a well taken free. Coakley responded for Wexford with two unanswered points giving Wexford a one point lead at the break. HT Wexford 0-04 Dublin 0-3.

Dublin introduced Jennifer Dunne into the game at half time in place of midfielder Hannah O’Dea. O’Dea was a member of the winning Colaiste Iosagain team who played the day previously in the Senior PPS All Ireland semi- final in Mullingar.

Within seconds of the restart Rachel Douglas brought the sides level but Wexford responded superbly with a well taken goal scored by the fore mentioned Coakley. Dublin rocked by the Wexford goal reacted with six unanswered points, McDunphy with 4 (3f), while Dunne and O’Sullivan tagged on a point each.

The decisive score of the game came in the 56th minute when Dublin were awarded a penalty for a foul on O’Sullivan in the small square. The Naomh Olaf forward had superbly fielded a floating high ball only to be brought down by Wexford keeper Brid Byrne and full back Sadbh McCarthy.

McDunphy’s initial penalty shot was stopped on the line by Byrne but the Raheny forward reacted quickest to slot the rebound into the back of the Wexford net.

Mia Jennings who had a superb game for Dublin today tagged on two well taken points to stretch Dublin’s lead further. The last score of the game came from corner forward McDunphy in the 60th minute bringing her personal tally for the game to 1-07.

Dublin manager Martin McDonnell will be pleased with the result but maybe not the performance. He was without regular midfielder Erica Byrne (concussion) while Muireann O’Gorman and Hannah O’Dea had felt the effects on their legs of two big championship games in less than 24 hours.

Dublin’s next game is against Offaly on the 20th of March. Offaly enjoyed a 7-8 to 5-8 win over Laois today having accounted for Wexford by a single point in their opening game of the campaign.
