Junior Dub Stars 2015

White Stars 5-09 Blue Stars 0-07

On the third day of the New Year a huge number of Dublin football enthusiasts gathered in DCU for the annual Dub Stars event. The heavy rain which had fallen earlier in the morning had cleared to give way to a beautiful sunny day in St Clare’s with the DCU 3G pitch providing a perfect setting for the first ladies football event of 2016.

First up was the Junior Dub Stars match which saw two teams involving representatives from 31 junior clubs within Dublin competing for the title.

The Blue stars team where unfortunate to lose two players from their panel before the game got underway as both Diana Farrell and Sadie Lanigan became unavailable for selection due to illness.

Nevertheless the Blue stars had a number of keen performers amongst their ranks including goal keeper Emma Young, midfielders Clare Fitzgerald and Kelli Taite along with centre forward Nuala McMahon.

It’s an old but true saying that goals wins games this indeed proved to be case as the White Stars raised the green flag on five occasions. Kate Mulvey was first on her sides score card with a well taken goal in the 8th minute while Breda Orahoe slotted home her side’s seconded goal just three minutes later.

At half time the score board read White Stars 2-04 Blue Stars 0-04. The Blue Stars points coming courtesy of a Donna Delaney free alongside scores from Alice Dunne, Kelli Taite and Clare Fitzgerald. Mulvey, Shannon Richardson and Claire Hannon had registered points for the White stars.

The impressive Mulvey was on target again with her second goal and her sides third within the opening minute of the second half.

Despite the deficit on the score board the game was a competitive contest with fine performances on both sides. The large crowd of spectators in attendance where fully appreciative of the football on display.

Victory was sealed for the White Stars when half forward Shannon Richardson bagged her side’s 4th and 5th goals in the 52nd and 54th minutes of the game. Richardson would finish the game as top scorer having bagged 2-04 with 2-02 from play.

Captain Aisling Kane led by example for the White Stars clearing up time and time again in her back line whilst at the same time linking up well with midfielder duo Ciara Foley and Mary Therese Fields.

The Blue Stars were unfortunate too lose former Dublin minor captain Ellen Keatley to a knee injury early in the second half. Keatley had up to that point given a solid display at centre half back. Keatley’s departure was felt by her team as they conceded 3-05 in the second period of the game.

Dublin Chairperson Joe Keane was thrilled with the success of the Junior match “it was fantastic to see so many players from different clubs and indeed back grounds coming together to play football. The standard and skill level of football on display was high especially for this time of year which is a credit to both the players and their respective clubs. It is also a reflection on where Dublin football is at the moment.  Going forward Dublin LGFA would hope to continue with the Junior Dub Stars game making it an annual event on our domestic fixtures calendar”.
