HEARTBREAK FOR FOXROCK AS THEY FALL AT PENULTIMATE HURDLE

(Match report courtesy of WEAREDUBLIN)

Donaghmoyne 1-08 Foxrock Cabinteely 0-07

It was heartbreak for Foxrock Cabinteely in their Senior All Ireland Club Championship semi-final as they lost to Donaghmoyne by four points.

The game was played in glorious sunshine in Donaghmoyne GAA club this afternoon and Foxrock got off to a bright start with the first score of the game after three minutes thanks to a lovely point scored by Amy Ring.

Less than a minute later and the home side scored what turned out to be the decisive score of the game, centre half forward Cathriona McConnell drove straight through the heart of the Foxrock defence and buried an unstoppable shot to the back of the net.

They quickly followed that up with a point from play from Monaghan county star Cora Courtney. The sides then swapped frees, scored by Cabinteely's Amy Ring and Donaghmoyne Cathriona McConnell.

The game was being played at a high tempo and players had very little time on the ball as both sides pressurised the player in possession.

On thirteen minutes a fine move from Foxrock was finished by Fiona Claffey who floated the ball over the bar. Two minutes later and Donaghmoyne restored their three point lead thanks to a Rosemary Courtney point.

Foxrock were struggling to get out of their own half as Donaghmoyne pressed high up the pitch and forced Cabinteely into either turning over the ball or over carrying it.

But a well worked move which involved a quick interchange of hand passes, ended with the ball played into Amy Ring who reduced the deficit to just two points with a nice point.

But The Monaghan club were having plenty of success running at the Foxrock backline and hit two points in a row, a free from Cathriona McConnell and a point from open play scored by Sandra McConnell to give them a four point lead with ten minutes left in the half.

One noticeable aspect of the game was the over robust high tackles from the Donaghmoyne players and they were eventually punished for their indiscipline when they were reduced to fourteen players for the rest of the half, the tackle that was punished with a yellow card, could have easily been a straight red.

With an extra player for the last ten minutes of the half you would have expected Foxrock to take full advantage, but their over reliance on hand passing the ball from the back played in the Monaghan sides hands as the pressurised the ball and forced Cabinteely players into mistakes.

The Southside outfit only managed a solitary point from Sinead Goldrick scored in the twenty fourth minute and it was Donaghmoyne who got the last point of the half, a free from the influential Cathriona McConnell in injury time to give the Monaghan side a four point lead at the break on a score line of 1-06 to 0-05.

The expected fight back from Foxrock in the second period never really materialised as they again struggled for long periods to get the ball out of their own half.

Donaghmoyne extended their lead to five in the seventh minute of the second half from a Fiona Lafferty point. Cabinteely responded with an Amy ring point after nine minutes, but it would be a full seventeen minutes before they troubled the scoreboard again.

Donaghmoyne controlled large parts of the next ten minutes but failed to add to their tally and where again punished for their indiscipline in the twentieth minute, when another over robust tackle from Hazel Kingham was punished rightly with a yellow card and the Monaghan outfit were again down to fourteen. To be honest they were lucky it was only one of their players that were shown the line as a number of other bad tackles went unpunished throughout the game.

Foxrock tried to make the extra player count this time round and used the kick pass to good effect but in fairness to Donaghmoyne they always managed to get numbers back and continually forced Foxrock into rushed passes and shots.

Cabinteely did manage to carve out two good goal chances, but both shots were hit straight at a relieved Donaghmoyne keeper.

In the twenty fifth minute Cora Courtney put five between the teams with an excellent point and try as they did, Cabinteely could only manage a further point, a free from Amy Ring, before the end and Donaghmoyne ran out deserved four point winners.
