Leinster Minor Championship 2015

Dublin v Westmeath

February 14th, 2pm

Parnells GAA Club, Coolock

The Dublin minor squad begin the defence of their Leinster crown this coming Saturday with an opening home tie versus Westmeath.  Proceedings get underway in Parnells GAA club, Coolock at 2pm.

Dublin has dominated the minor grade at provincial level in recent times but it is Wexford who lead the way in the Leinster championship honours list with 11 titles. The Slaney siders however last lifted the minor championship trophy back in 1994.

In fact Dublin has won the Leinster minor championship nine times in the last ten years with the one exception coming in 2010 when Laois broke the sequence to capture the provincial crown.

Saturday will be a special occasion for Minor manager Martin McDonnell as he commences his managerial Inter County career. The Clanna Gael Fontenoy club man had previously served as a County selector on the Dublin U16 team back in 2013.

McDonnell has gathered an experience managerial team around him including Antrim native and well respected coach Clare Dowdall who was involved with the Dublin U17 development squad in 2014. Team selector Fergus O’Carroll was also part of the Dublin U16 managerial team back in 2013.

Current Dublin senior panellist Serena Hannon is the minor goal keeping coach while former County player Kathleen Murphy is the strength and conditioning instructor.

The minor squad consists of 34 players representing 19 clubs from across the County.  The squad includes 10 minors from last year’s provincial winning panel along with 9 players from the 2014 Dublin U16 team that reached the All -Ireland final versus Cork.

The squad also include 8 championship new comers along with 7 players who represented Dublin at underage level in 2013 and 2012.

Westmeath will provide a stern test for the reigning champions having reached the provincial final last season with a very youthful squad of players.  A lot of work has been done in recent years to develop Westmeath football and Dublin will be tested fully on Saturday afternoon by the Midland County.

Dublin will be captained by dual Inter County Star Hannah Hegarty from St Jude’s GAA club, Templeogue.  Hegarty was also named as the Minor Camogie captain for 2015. To hold the captaincy in both codes is a marvellous achievement and indeed honour for Hannah, her family and club.

Everyone involved in Dublin LGFA would like to wish Martin, his management team and squad all the very best of luck for Saturday and indeed the remainder of the championship.
