All Ireland U14 Semi-Final - match report

Mayo 5-08 (23) Dublin 4-09 (21)

Dublin bowed out of the championship today following a dramatic two point defeat to a powerful and well drilled Mayo outfit.

From the throw in the Connacht champions took the game to Dublin with Captain and full forward Maria Reilly leading by example the Kiltane forward causing the Dublin defence untold problems with her powerful surging runs.

Unlike their Leinster final appearance versus Meath, Fearghall Brennan’s chargers were slow to settle while Dublin took time to find their rhythm Mayo’s full forward line of Sweeney, Reilly and Loftus were well out of the blocks hitting the Dubs with three first half goals.

Mayo took a seven point lead into the dressing room at half time, Mayo 3-04 Dublin 1-03.

Dublin’s first half goal came from petite corner forward Caoimhe O’Connor while Holland, Fagan and Hamill all pointing for the blues.

On the restart both sides had exchanged scores when Mayo’s Carrie Loftus toe poked home Mayo’s fourth goal a minute later Dublin received another hammer blow when centre back Eve Reidy was sin binned for a clumsy tackle on Reilly.

In the 39th minute, Mayo had tagged on another 1-02 their fifth goal coming from the on rushing half forward Grainne O’Neill, remarkably Mayo would not score again for the remainder of the game.

Dublin’s management tried to turn the tide introducing a number of substitutes into the game, Megan Cluskey and Maria O’Dea were two players who took the opportunity given to them and tore into the game.

To their credit Dublin never threw in the towel, their efforts where rewarded when O’Connor raised the green flag for the second time, her low shot sailed by the superb Michelle Treacey in the Mayo goal.

In the last three minutes the huge Dublin support where treated to an amazing come back when sky blue super sub Ciara Murray bagged two goals in the 58th and 59th minute bringing the Dubs to within two points of a now shell shocked Mayo.

Unbelievably Dublin had been down by fifteen points only to haul themselves back to be within two points of Mayo but lady luck and most importantly the clock was to run out for the Dubs, referee Seamus Mulvihill blew his whistle breaking Dublin hearts and sending Mayo into the All Ireland final where they will play Kerry on July 20th.
