U-16 Leinster Championship Round four Dublin V Meath:

Kilbride GAA club Co Meath

Dublin 1-13 Meath 0-8

Dublin played Meath in the fourth round of the U-16 Leinster championship in Kilbride last Sunday. Both teams came into the match unbeaten so it was a match to savour in glorious sunshine. Meath made the most of the early exchanges taking 3 points without reply. Dublin had to wait 14 minutes before opening their scoring with Rachel Douglas slotting over a well worked point. This was quickly followed up with another point from full forward Danielle Murray. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams exchanging scores, the Dublin backs working very hard to keep Meath at bay. Wing back Chloe Lawless worked tirelessly throughout the match and her work rate was superb.

Towards the end of the first half,  captain Erica Byrne at midfield pulled up with leg cramping and had to be substituted. Hannah O’Dea came out from corner back to take up the midfield slot while Muireann O’Gorman came on at left half back and handled the difficult task of marking Meath’s sharp shooter Megan Thynne very well.  By now Meath led 5 points to 4.

Just before half time, Hannah O’Neill secured the equaliser. However a turnover by Meath in injury time resulted in a point and then  on the stroke of half time Meath earned a free close to the goal which was easily converted, sending Meath into the dressing room 2 points up.

Meath came out buoyed up in the second half and really tested the Dublin defence, earning a point for their hard work and pressed hard for further scores. Meath broke through the very tight full back line of Tarah O’Sullivan, Megan Duffy and Sabrina Maloney, shooting at goal which the Dublin keeper, Katie Ronan shepherded over the end line. Erica Byrne returned to the field of play up front together with Ellen Curran who was returning from injury. They both combined well and between them scored 1-2 within a couple of minutes without reply.  From here on it was all Dublin with Mia Jennings, Niamh Carty and Hannah o’Neill adding further points to finish the match strongly.
