Dubs win in the West!

Sinead Aherne was in superb form for Dublin today in Ballyheane with the St Sylvester’s sharp shooter bagging an impressive 1-07 for her team against Peter Clarke’s Mayo in the division one TESCO Home Grown NFL clash.

Coming in to todays game Mayo’s ace forward Cora Staunton had scored an astonishing 2-21 in just two rounds of the league but today it would be the turn of Dublin’s full forward line of Lyndsey Davey, Aherne and Siobhan Woods to grab the head lines as the trio gave a master class in shooting amassing between them an incredible 2-10 from Dublin’s final tally of 2-12.

The visitors work rate was extremely impressive in the opening half especially as both teams had to try to adjust to the difficult under foot conditions with the pitch in Ballyheane cutting up extremely easy making playing football extremely difficult for the players.

Dublin settled quickly into the game taking an early lead and where within fifteen minutes 1-05 to 0-3 points ahead of Mayo, with Aherne having raised the green flag for the visitors.

However the Dublin goal was soon cancelled out by Mayo when Sligo referee John Niland, awarded Mayo a penalty for an alleged foul on Staunton in the small square.  Despite Dublin’s protests that the Carnacon ace had in fact dived Nilands decision stood.

Staunton took the resulting free kick duly despatching the ball past Dublin keeper, Tyrell.

Shortly after Tyrell was to be beaten for a second time when Doireann Hughes finding the back of the Dublin net.  After a slow start by Peter Clarkes chargers Mayo finished the half stronger and took a two point lead into the dressing room at the interval, Mayo 2-05 Dublin 1-06.

Dublin got the second half under way in impressive style by tapping on a couple of points thus quickly bringing the sides level.  Dublin where to get the decisive score of the game came when Siobhan Woods of Raheny and DCU popped up to grab Dublin’s second goal.

Woods decisive goal had propelled Dublin into a valuable three point lead once Dublin had taken the lead they would never ever relinquish it.

Both sides tagged on further points to their tallies but Dublin’s defence was in superb form holding tight to prevent any chance of a late strike from Staunton or Mayo.

So the Dubs left Ballyheane with three more valuable league points in the bag along with a famous victory over Mayo.  Woods goal was the difference between the sides as this entertaining game finished, Dublin 2-12 Mayo 2-09.
