Dublin Team named for Monaghan clash
- Jan 31,2014
Gregoryâs Girls!
New Dublin Senior boss, Gregory McGonigle has announced his starting fifteen to face Ulster champions Monaghan in Sundayâs opening round of the Tesco Home Grown NFL.
Former Monaghan manager, McGonigle has chosen eight players who started for the Dubâs in last Septembers All Ireland quarter final devastating loss to Cork for Sundayâs trip to Aughnamullen.
Hannah Tyrell, Deirdre Murphy, Sorcha Furlong, Colleen Barrett, Sarah McCaffrey, Carla Rowe and Siobhan Woods all come into the team to claim a starting sky blue jersey for this much anticipated league clash.
St Brigids duo, Sorcha Furlong and Colleen Barrett make a welcome return to the Dublin fold following their year out from the County scene owing to overseas travelling commitments.
Furlong who had suffered a serious knee injury prior to her football sabbatical appears to be completely recovered from the injury which had hindered her football career over the last couple of seasons. She returns to the centre of defence with current All Star centre back, Sinead Goldrick moving to the wings to accommodate the St Brigids stars return.
Tyrell who is a former All-Ireland minor and senior B winner with Dublin takes over between the posts from veteran Dublin goal keeper, Cliodhna OâConnor. Deirdre Murphy, Sarah McCaffrey, Carla Rowe and Siobhan Woods all played a significant role in Dublinâs All Ireland minor victory over Tyrone back in 2012. All except McCaffrey had previously been called up to the senior ranks last season these former minor stars will now be expected to make the push to command a regular spot on the Dubs starting fifteen .
The young guns will be mindful of the number of Dublin stalwarts which are named amongst the substitutes for the Monaghan clash with the likes of Natalia Hyland, Siobhan McGrath, Denise Masterson and Ailish McKenna all vying for positions giving the new Dublin management team a welcome and healthy competition for places.
Derry native, McGonigle will be hoping for a good performance from his new chargers on Sunday as Dublin has not fared well against Monaghan in their recent league clashes.
Last season the metropolitans suffered a nineteen point defeat at the hands of the Ulster champions the memory of this encounter should provide the motivation required for the Dubâs to cause an upset in the opening round of the 2014 NFL.
Cavan native Maggie Farrelly is the official in charge in Aughnamullen with throw in time pencilled in for 2pm.
