Match Report - St Brigids v Na Fianna

Na Fianna pip Brigids to reach final:

Tesco Home Grown Dublin Ladies Club semi- final

In an exciting semi-final at Russell Park, Na Fianna narrowly beat St Brigids to win a place in the Tesco home grown Dublin senior championship final.

 

A very close opening few minutes of the game had wides from both sides; however Na Fianna kept up the pressure and the opening point of the game was scored by Laura Walsh. They were then awarded a free, taken by Orlagh Egan, however it went wide.

Play was kept tight with both teams looking for possession, but Egan soon added another point to the Na Fianna score. 

 

Noelle Healy of St Brigids had a shot on goal but it was blocked by Na Fianna's goalkeeper Sorcha Turnbull. A great catch from St Brigids' Shona Barrett kept the ball with them and this lead to Aisling King getting their opening point of the game.

 

A strong midfield kept the ball with St Brigids and they pushed hard for a second point but were denied. Soon after, Na Fianna brought the ball back to their half and Ciara McDermott put another point onto the scoreboard. She soon followed this with another shot but went wide.

 

A point from St Brigids' Katie Murphy brought them their second of the game, however straight away Na Fianna regained possession and Bronagh O'Donnell scored a point for her side.

 

As both teams fought for possession, Na Fianna won out and Khloe Dillon Coote tried for a goal which was saved, but put over the bar by Laura Walsh for a point.

Shortly after, Na Fianna took possession again and Alma O'Donnell scored another point. St Brigids brought the ball back into their half and had a good attack, but it resulted in a wide; however they kept the pressure on and Healy scored a point.

 

Na Fianna's Aoife Nolan scored another point for her side just before St Brigids' Lindsay Kilmurray was carried off the pitch with an injury and was replaced by Coleen Barrett.

As half time drew nearer the home side pushed for another score before the whistle and Aisling King had a shot but it was stopped by a great block from Bronagh O'Donnell.

 

At half time the score stood at 0-7 to 0-3 in favour of Na Fianna.

A strong start from Na Fianna brought the ball into their hands straight away and Walsh had a shot but it went wide. The held possession but St Brigids won it off them and soon converted it into a point from Elaine Kelly.

 

St Brigids gave away a free and Egan stepped up to take it and she added another point onto the scoreboard.

Deidre Murphy of St Brigids made a break through Na Fianna's backline and it resulted in a point from Elaine Murphy. Straight away Na Fianna brought the ball back and Nadine Doherty scored a point.

 

In an attack from St Brigids they shot three wides, however they kept pushing and Elaine Murphy scored another point. However Na Fianna once more wasted no time in getting their counter attack underway and Doherty scored another point. They still held onto possession of the ball and Aoife Nolan scored a fantastic point.

 

A free to St Brigids gave Murphy another point. This was followed by a strong attack from Na Fianna which gave them back possession which Egan converted into a point.

St Brigids fought back and King scored the first goal of the game and brought them right back into it. This was followed straight after with another point from Heay bringing the gap in scores to just one point.

 

A fantastic run from Healy gave St Brigids another goal and brought them in front for the first time in the game.

 

Na Fianna bridged the gap to one point again with just five minutes left in the game.

A last minute substitution on the St Brigids team saw Shauna Hinkson being replaced by Nancy Ferris.

 

An incident of travelling gave away a free to Na Fianna's Egan and she scored a point to bring the sides level. Soon after she took another shot but t went wide shortly before St Brigids gave away another free, taken and scored y Egan again to put them back in front.

 

St Brigids held possession in the dying seconds and made an attempt to run for the goal, but the clock ran out and Na Fianna won their place in the Tesco home grown Dublin senior championship final.
