Dubs overcome the challenge of Tyrone

  • Mar 24,2013

Dublin boss, Paul Gilheaney will be satisfied with his side's ten point victory over Tyrone in the 5th round TESCO Home Grown NFL clash especially since Dublin had in the previous round endured a heavy defeat to Cork.

The game which was played in bitterly cold and blustery conditions was an entertaining enough affair considering the setting. Dublin who had played against the strong breeze for the opening half of the match had led their Northern challengers at the interval by 1-03 to 0-04.

Dublin's opening goal had come from the boot of the industrious Noelle Healy, whose speedy runs through the Tyrone defence was causing the Red Hand County some concern.

However, Dublin were dealt a hammer blow within the first twenty minutes when Dublin captain Sinead Goldrick, had to be carried off the field of play with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Tyrone Captain Gemma Begley, better known for her attacking prowess in the forward line was working hard from midfield linking up well with both Donnelly sisters, Cathy and Joline but try as they might Tyrone couldn't transform possession into scores.

Credit must go to Dublin defenders Siobhan McGrath, Sinead Finnegan and Rachel Ruddy whose worked rate in unfavourable and testing conditions had to be commended.

Dublin began the second half in lively fashion indeed Noelle Healy was unfortunate not to raise a green flag for the second time when her rasping shot bounced back off the post.

Dublin's persistence in front of the posts did eventually pay off when Raheny ace Siobhan Woods, popped over three unanswered points to push her side further ahead.

But the turning point in the second half came when Dublin substitute Hannah Tyrell, out jumped the Tyrone full back Laura McGillion to knock the ball past the onrushing Tyrone keeper, Shannon Lynch.

Tyrell's goal effectively ended the game as a contest.

Dublin's third goal was scored by Ballyboden St Endas, Natalia Hyland who had the calmness and strength to slot a low shot past Lynch while being challenged by two Tyrone defenders.

Dublin final tally of 3-07 was impressive considering the weather conditions, with 3-06 scored from play.

Up next for the Dubs will be the visit of high flying league leaders, Monaghan to the Capital on Easter Sunday. The game is pencilled in for a 2pm throw in time in Lawless Park, Swords, home of Fingallians GAA Club.
