Tesco HomeGrown All Ireland Club Final Previews

29/11/2012

The 2012 TESCO HomeGrown All Ireland club Senior and Junior Finals take place this weekend with all four provinces represented between the two games.

Birr hosts the first game which will feature Cork's, Boherbue, facing Dublin's, Thomas Davis, in the Junior Final. Thomas Davis enjoyed a resounding victory over Annaghdown in the previous round with a 24 point win in the semi-final. It was not as straight forward for Boherbue as they faced Donaghmoyne's ‘B' team in the other semi-final but their goal scoring ability proved to be the difference as they won by 2 goals. It will be a real family affair for Boherbue as they have no fewer than six sets of sisters on the team including the O'Connor's, Daly's, Casey's, Murphy's, McAuliffe's and the Clifford's.

The senior final will see an old rivalry renewed as two of the country's best club sides face each other. Defending champions, Carnacon, from Mayo, will face Monaghan's, Donaghmoyne, in Ballinamore on Sunday. The defending champions, Carnacon, will hope that 8 time All Star, Cora Staunton, will be able to lead the attack as she has done so many times in the past. This is anything but a one player team though as fellow Mayo stars and former All Stars Noelle Tierney, Claire Egan and Michelle McGing will also start for the Mayo side. Fiona McHale will also be a handful from the full forward position.

Donaghmoyne will have fond memories of playing against Carnacon as the last time they met in the All Ireland Final it was the Monaghan side that left as champions in 2006. Donaghmoyne will hope that the four Courtney sisters will be able to put up a defensive screen to counteract the much vaunted Carnacon attack whilst 2012 All Star and team captain Cathriona McConnell will hope to provide the cutting edge for the 2009 champions. Former All Star, Amanda Casey, starts at midfield for the Ulster Champions and her battle against Claire Egan will be one of the decisive factors in the destination of the title.

Carnacon will contest their third final in a row after losing in 2010 and winning last year, they also enjoyed victories in 2002, 2007 and 2008. Donaghmoyne have won twice previously in 2006 and 2009 and contested the final in 2005.
