Leinster MFC Rd 1

Dublin 2-09 Meath 2-13

For the third year in a row Meath have defeated their neighbours Dublin in the opening round of the Leinster MFC.

The weather played a role as both teams tried to get use to a strong swirling wind and tricky underfoot conditions. The players took time to settle on the ball with both sides exchanging scores early on.

The decisive score of the opening half came in the 11th minute when Meath full forward, Orlaith Reilly registered the first goal of the game to push her side 1-03 to 0-02 ahead.

Dublin responded well with points from Ellen Leddy Doyle (2 frees) and Charlie Murphy. Meath’s Isabel Thorp converted a free to leave two points separating the teams at the interval. HT Meath 1-04 Dublin 0-05.

The second period followed the pattern of the opening half with each side keeping their score board ticking as they exchanged scores. During this phase Dublin were unlucky having missed two goal opportunities.

In the 9th minute, Karrie Rudden raised a big cheer from the travelling support when the Ballyboden St Enda’s rep finally raised a green flag to put the Dubs ahead by 1-07 to 1-05.

Rudden’s goal was the catalyst for a huge Meath response which saw the home team score 1-04 (1f) in a five minute spell. Orlaith Reilly on target again with a well taken goal that Dublin keeper Katie Moran Tighe could do little to stop. The lead swung in Meath’s way. The Royals now lead by 2-09 to 1-07.

To their credit Dublin did not throw down the towel continuing to battle bravely on. Their determination was rewarded when Orla Keighran finished off a well worked play with a goal in the 35th minute leaving just three points between the sides.

Meath resettled, and played out the remainder of the game well. They kept possession, worked the ball up the pitch and tapped on a point to secure their victory.

Up next, Dublin welcome reigning Leinster champions Kildare to the capital on March 23rd. Kildare had a comprehensive 9-11 to 2-06 victory over Laois today.
