Leinster Minor Championship Rd 2

FT Dublin 2-05 Meath 2-06

Meath survived a late Dublin rally to claim three valuable points in round 2 of the Leinster minor championship. Wednesdays game was switched late to TUD Blanchardstown owing to the pitch in Skryne GAA club failing a pitch inspection that afternoon.

Indeed, full credit to both teams for serving up an entertaining contest despite the rain and blustery weather conditions. Additional credit to the supporters who braved the freezing temperatures and conditions to support their respective Counties.

Meath played with the aid of the wind for the opening half with Dublin doing well to contain the Royal Counties onslaught in front of the posts both teams went into the dressing room level at half time,1-02 apiece. Clontarf’s, Timea Kovac registered the opening goal of the game in the 9th minute while Aideen Reilly (Kilbride) was on target soon after for the visitors.

Dublin were expected by many to take control of the game in the second half having the aid of the now roaring wind, but it was Meath who started to dominate proceedings with Lauren Woods banging home her sides second goal of the game within six minutes of the restart.

Dublin struggled to find their rhythm and Meath were gaining confidence. Sixteen minutes had ticked by before the home team registered their opening score of the second period. As the game edged towards injury time Dublin with some hard work had narrowed the gap to a single goal.

Now in injury time, Meath sensing a win could be on the cards tagged on a crucial point to push the gap back out to four and it proved to be the key score of the night with Nia Hannon hitting the back of the Meath net in the 62nd minute but the Dublin comeback was soon denied as referee Paul McCaughey blew full time moments later.

Dublin travel to Kildare for their final group game of the series on the 26th of April next.
