Leinster U16 Championship Rd 2

FT Dublin 5-05 Kildare 1-08

Dublin remain unbeaten in the Leinster U16 championship following their nine-point victory over Kildare. The score line did not reflect the contest that took place on the field of play with Dublin having to work hard to shrug off a tenacious Kildare outfit.

The game was played in difficult weather conditions with the players having to contend with a strong swirling wind and intermittent blustery showers. Nonetheless it was an entertaining contest with a high level of skill and athleticism on display by both teams.

It was the home side who took the lead into the half time dressing room as the score board read Dublin 3-04 Kildare 0-04. Orla Keighran, Charlie Murphy and Rebecca McEvoy raising the green flag for the reigning Leinster champions.

Kildare as expected took the game to Dublin in the second half and drove at their opponents, but the Dublin defence stood tall working well as a unit even when reduced at one stage to thirteen players.

With eight minutes remaining on the clock the deficit between the teams was now fourteen points.

Dublin’s ability to bag goals was a key factor in the game with Ciara Brogan and Gemma Connolly adding to their teams tally with a goal apiece coming in the 40th and 44th minute.

Kildare struck for a late consolation goal in the 64th minute to leave nine points between the sides on the final whistle. In the other group game, Meath defeated Wexford by 4-06 to 0-08.

The final round of group games takes place on April 9th next with Dublin taking on Wexford and Kildare playing Meath.
