Leinster Minor B Final

Wednesday 6th July 2022

Dublin v Longford

Dublin 2-08 (14) Longford 3-10 (19)

The Leinster minor B championship trophy is heading to Longford this evening following the Counties five-point victory over Dublin in a winf swept and rainy Clonard.

Dublin started the contest in whirlwind fashion with Megan McAuley registering Dublin’s first score of the game within 30 seconds, with a well taken point. The Man O War full forward bagged the opening goal of the game some 4 minutes later and the Sky Blues appeared to have found their scoring rhythm early on. Niamh Crowley raised the green flag for a second time in the 13th minute with a well take score to put the Dub’s 2-02 to 0-2 ahead.

The game turned Longford’s way just before half time when a speculative low shot from corner forward Anna Hayden somehow found its way into the back of the Dublin net. A minute later Longford where awarded a penalty by Wexford official, Barry Redmond. The spot kick was duly despatched to the back of the net by Ella Duggan. The momentum was now firmly with Longford.

In a blink of an eye, the lead had swung Longford’s way they lead at the break by a single point HT score Longford 2-05 (11) Dublin 2-04 (10).

The opening quarter of the second period was a cagey affair as both teams exchanged scores. With ten minutes gone just two points separated the teams and the game was in the melting pot plus the wind and rain had made conditions difficult for both teams.

The decisive score of the second half came in the 40th minute when Kate MacEntire latched onto a poor Dublin kick out returning the ball with aplomb past Dublin keeper Lauren Quane to push her side five points clear of the metropolitans.

Longford defended their lead well keeping Dublin to just one point in the final ten minutes of the contest. Dublin did have several opportunities to reduce the deficit but could not find the range or their way past a determined and dogged Longford defence.

Longford will now play Sligo in the All-Ireland semi-final on July 20th at stake a place in the All Ireland final versus either Kerry or Monaghan.
