Leinster Senior Club Championship Final

Foxrock Cabinteely 5-10 St Laurence’s 1-03

Dublin champions Foxrock Cabinteely secured their second Leinster senior provisional championship title in a row yesterday (Sunday November 7th) with an emphatic nineteen point victory over Kildare champions, St Laurence’s.

St Laurences appearance in their first senior provisional final a year on from obtaining senior status was a significant accomplishment for the Kildare club.  Unfortunately they came face to face versus a strong well drilled outfit that could call upon the services of a number of seasoned and experienced players in the likes of Sinead Goldrick, Niamh Collins, Laura Nerney, Fiona Claffey, Amy Ring and Amy Connolly, to name but a few.

The game which was played before a sizeable crowd in a biting cold windswept Kinnegad was a one sided contest as reigning champions Foxrock Cabinteely controlled the game from start to finish in spite of the best efforts of Kate Leahy, Roisin Crowe, Louise Keatley, Ciara Wheeler and Emer Fogarty.

St Laurence’s simply could not live with the pace and fitness of the Dublin champions who despite playing the opening half against a strong breeze had outscored their opponents by 4-04 to 0-03 to lead by 13 points at the break.

Foxrock Cabinteely first half goals were scored by Fiona Claffey (11th, and 27th minutes), Anne Marie Murphy (13th minute) and Sinead Goldrick (19th minute).  While St Laurences full forward Emer Fogarty was the only player on the score sheet for the Kildare champions scoring all three points of their first half scores, two of which came from converted free kicks.

Foxrock Cabinteely began the second half in dominant fashion with Amy Connolly (3 points) and Fiona Claffey tagging on four unanswered scores in quick succession.

St Laurences did rattle the net with 12 minutes to go when half forward Ciara Wheeler blasted a 13 metre free kick past Laurie Ahern in the Foxrock Cabinteely goal. Wheeler's goal would be the only score the Kildare champions would register in the entire second half.

Foxrock Cabinteely substitute Ciara Murphy responded for her side in the 53rd minute when she netted her sides 5th goal of the contest.

Fiona Claffey who finished the game with 2-01 was presented with the Player of the Match award by Leinster Council officials.

Foxrock Cabinteely had solid performances by half backs Sarah Brophy and Sinead Goldrick, Midfielder Laura Nerney and corner forward Amy Connolly.

Foxrock Cabinteely will now have two weeks to prepare for the visit of Mayo champions, Carnacon to the capital. Cork champions Mourneabbey will travel to Monaghan for their semi-final tussle with reigning champions, Donaghmoyne both semi-finals will take place on Sunday November 20th

Carnacon will provide the Dublin champions with a much stiffer challenge in the forthcoming semi-final as the Mayo outfit lead by their talis-woman Cora Staunton, go in search of their 6th All Ireland club title.
