Rowe and Collins to lead Dublin this summer …

Ahead of this Saturday’s opening round of the TG4 Leinster senior championship Dublin manager Mick Bohan has announced that Carla Rowe (Clann Mhuire) and Niamh Collins (Foxrock Cabinteely) will share the Dublin captaincy role.

Sinead Aherne had captained the Dublin senior football team since Bohan took over the reins from Gregory McGonigle in December 2016. In that time period Aherne has led Dublin to four senior All Ireland titles, three Leinster senior championships and two division one national football leagues.

The only other player to lift the Brendan Martin cup aloft as senior Dublin Captain was Denise Masterson back in 2010 when Dublin enjoyed All Ireland success for a historic first time.

Rowe (27) made her senior debut in 2014 having enjoyed underage All Ireland success at both Minor and U16 level with the sky blues. Rowe quickly established herself as a serious talent on the Inter County scene and to date has won four senior All Irelands, three U21 All Irelands, six Leinster senior titles, two division one NFL medals while picking up three All Star awards along the way (2015, 2016, 2019).

Niamh Collins (29) began her senior Inter County career with Dublin two years previous to Rowe in 2012 under the guidance of former manager, Peter Clarke. Collins is recognised by many as one of the top defenders and indeed man markers in the Country. Although often overlooked by the All-Star selection committee this was eventually rectified in 2019. Collins too has an impressive tally of silverware to her name, four senior All Irelands, eight Leinster senior titles, two division one NFL medals and All Ireland medals at U14, U16 and minor grades.

Former Captain, Sinead Aherne remains a key figure for Mick Bohan side as they go in search of their 16th Leinster and 6th Senior All Ireland titles this summer. Can Cara Rowe and Niamh Collins join Masterson and Aherne by raising aloft the Mary Ramsbottom and or Brendan Martin trophies – we certainly hope so but only time will tell!

Dublin will begin the defense of their TG4 Leinster senior title this coming Saturday when they travel to TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar (1:30Pm) for their opening game of the 2022 campaign versus Westmeath.

Admission to the game is by ticket only details of how to purchase tickets is available on our website https://dublinladiesgaelic.ie/news-detail/10079026/
