DUBLIN TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT

LIDL NFL Div 1 Rd 2

Saturday February 1st, 5pm

Mayo v Dublin

Elverys McHale Park, Castlebar

Following on from last weekend’s drawn game with Tipperary Dublin management have made two changes to their starting 15 for Saturday’s trip to Castlebar and a meeting with old rivals, Mayo.

All Star nominee, Eabha Rutledge returns to the side slotting in at corner-back with Laura McGinley moving to the bench. While up front, Kate Sullivan is named on the half forward line in place of Laura Kane. Sullivan made an impact when introduced into the Tipperary game and has been given an opportunity to impress her management team from the start as Dublin once again have to plan without the services of key forwards such as Sinead Aherne, Nicole Owens and Lyndsey Davey.

Niamh Hetherton is included amongst the Dublin replacements for this Saturday’s game having been unavailable for selection for the previous fixture as the versatile player was on All Ireland semi-final duty with her Camogie club St Vincent’s last weekend.

Mayo got their 2020 league campaign off to a flying start with a 4-07 (19) to 2-09 (15) victory over Donegal last weekend. Lisa Cafferky and Rachel Kearns bagged their sides goals while Fiona Doherty, Kathryn Sullivan and debutant Maria Cannon were also prominent for Mayo.

League encounters between these two Counties have been close, keenly contested affairs with Dublin so far coming out on top in their most recent NFL meetings.

Dublin also defeated Mayo back in the 2018 NFL decider in Parnell Park on a score line of 3-11 (20) to 1-08 (11) but this Saturdays clash is a whole new ball game with both Counties missing a number of seasoned players.

Mayo are without Sarah Rowe, Grace Kelly, Niamh Kelly and Aileen Gilroy who like Dublin’s Sinead Goldrick and Niamh McEvoy are all in Australia playing  AFLW this Spring.

On a positive note, Saturday’s fixture between Dublin and Mayo is for a 4th year in a row, a double header with their male counterparts. Which has to be viewed as a major plus for the continued promotion of the women’s game. Gus Chapman from Sligo will get the action underway in McHale Park at 5pm followed by the GAA fixture at 7pm.
