POWERFUL DISPLAY FROM PARNELL'S SEALS JUNIOR D CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Parnells 7-14
Whitehall Colmcille 1-07

Parnells swept aside a gallant Whitehall Colmcille's side with a powerful display to win Dublin Ladies Junior D Club Championship Final yesterday evening in St Margarets GAA Club.

On a bright evening it was Parnells who shine brightest from the start. They ruled the middle third of the pitch with midfield pairing of Niamh McEvoy and Peggy Black unstoppable.

They were ably supported by halfbacks Aisling Sullivan and Kelly Jean Courtney running from deep and available for a pass on every occasion. Whitehall found themselves penned into their own half for long periods as they valiantly tried to stem the constant attacks coming at them.

But the incisive running and clever and accurate passing from star of the show Niamh McEvoy opened up the Whitehall defence time after time and she was involved in all three of Parnells first half goals.

The first came from an interception from McEvoy around midfield, she strode forward with authority brushing aside tacklers before passing the ball to Suzanne Hannon who rounded the keeper and finished to the net for the first of four goals she would score on the night.

The second goal involved five players, Aisling Sullivan turned the ball over around the Parnells 45, passed the ball to the energetic Aisling O'Mahony who hand passed the ball to the on rushing Peggy Black who found her midfield partner McEvoy on her shoulder just to her right, Niamh hit a pass over the top to Hannon who repeated her earlier feat and rounded the keeper for the second time to finish to the net.

Whitehall though never let their heads drop and Ashley O'Sullivan, Kate Mulvey, Grainne Cunniffe and Susan Critchley took the fight to Parnells.

A brilliant pass from Kate Mulvey released Cunniffe who rounded her marker and buried the ball past the despairing dive of Chloe Downs in the Parnells goal and the ball nestled in the bottom left hand corner of the net.

But Parnells were not to be denied tonight and the game was all but wrapped up with their third goal. Parnells were awarded a free kick but it was sent narrowly wide, from the resultant kick out it was won cleanly by McEvoy who stormed forward, she off loaded the ball to Hannon, she returned the pass to McEvoy who had continued her run and Niamh finished the move to the back of the onion sack.

In between the goals Parnells hit some excellent points from Enya Hannigan with three, McEvoy with two, and one apiece from Courtney and Black. Whitehall's two other scores of the half came from the boot of Susan Critchley, one from open play and the other a well taken free. At the break Parnells led by 3-07 to 1-02 and Colmcille's had a mountain to climb.

Any hope Whitehall had of getting back into the game was ended inside the opening 15 minutes of the second half as Parnells scored three goals. Eight minutes into the second period another powerful run from Niamh McEvoy opened up the Whitehall defence, her midfield partner Peggy Black arrived on her right and a quick hand pass set her free and she finished with aplomb to the back of the net.

Player of the match McEvoy was involved again minutes later, she released Rebecca Murphy on goal and she made no mistake. And in the fifteenth minute yet again McEvoy was involved, after yet another defence splitting run, she passed to Black, the ball was lobbed towards the square and Suzanne Hannon flicked the ball past the keeper to complete her hat-trick. Hannon added another goal in similar fashion later in the half when an attempt at a point dropped short.

But in fairness to Whitehall they never gave up and gave it a right go and hit three unanswered points from Susan Critchley in a late period of dominance possession wise and the losing margin was an unfair reflection of their effort.

But in the end they were fairly beaten by the superior side on the night, the fitness levels alone that Parnells showed were phenomenal with their players covering a huge amount of ground during the game and in Niamh McEvoy, Parnells had that one special player that dictated the game from start to finish.
